HOCKEY 101 is a program designed to give children who have NEVER played hockey an opportunity to put on the equipment, lace up a pair a skates, grab a stick and step out on the ice without incurring the expenses of outfitting a child in hockey equipment and paying for a full season program. HOCKEY 101 allows a child to try the sport before committing to the costs associated with it. But beware Mom & Dad….once they put on the equipment and get on the ice….they LOVE it!
MVAHA member organizations will provide an equipment set to each registrant that includes a helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey pants, shin guards and a stick. Your child will be issued a numbered set of equipment and the equipment will need to be checked back in at the end of each session.
Each child will also get a MVAHA Hockey Jersey – and KEEP IT!
We recommend a mouthguard also. Depending upon the rink, there may be a nominal additional charge for skate rental. ARRIVE EARLY!!! Sign-in and dressing will take awhile (45 – 30 min!).
Youth hockey players will greet you at the door of the rink and direct you to the registration/sign-in table where you will complete some additional paperwork (USA Hockey waivers are required!) and be assigned a numbered equipment bag. Your youth host will then direct you to the locker room where you’ll dress in your hockey gear! There will be more youth hosts in the locker rooms to assist with dressing in hockey equipment. While your child is dressing, now is a good time to rent skates if needed. Please also note “Mom Friendly” locker rooms versus “No Moms” locker rooms.
Once dressed your child will go to the area closest to the rink door where they will get a stick and have their name put on their helmet. USA Hockey certified coaches and older youth hockey player assistants will be there to divide up the kids and give instructions. Next ………all future hockey players ONTO THE ICE!!!
$15 Registration Fee includes equipment rental (except skates) and Hockey Jersey (to keep)
Please thank your ice rink & sponsor organizations! The ice is donated!
Fees cover the cost of the jersey and cleaning the equipment.
Parent volunteers will be available to answer questions during the on ice session.

The ice hockey season generally runs from October to early March. Each organization sets its own fee structure but fees are designed to cover the cost of ice rental, uniforms (jersey and socks), referees for games and organizational expenses. The organizations are all volunteer run 501c3 not for profit corporations. Coaches are also volunteers but are required to have USA Hockey certification. All participants in a youth hockey program must also be USA Hockey registered ($35 for the past several years
Teams are designated by age group and skill level.
Age ranges are defined by birth year and are:
- Mite (5/6 – 8 years)
- Squirt (9 – 10 years)
- Pee Wee (11 – 12 years)
- Bantam (13 – 14 years)
- Midget (15 – 18 years)
- Instructional Program spans most age groups
In order, the skill levels are:
- House/recreational
- Select/B
- A
- AA
- AAA
Most skill levels are offered by an area organization with the exception of the highest skill level AAA. House teams will generally travel locally to compete against other teams in central (Columbus area) and southern Ohio (Cincinnati)/N. Kentucky area and may enter tournaments elsewhere but that is a team decision. Travel hockey is a different animal and the travel extends to a larger part of the Midwest, including, of course, Michigan. Girls and boys do play hockey together at almost every age and skill level but there is a growing girls’ ice hockey program in the Miami Valley.
MVAHA will be sponsoring an all area equipment sale/swap in August 2010 to give area hockey players (current and future) the opportunity to purchase gently used hockey equipment at amazing prices! This is just one way MVAHA is working with the local organizations to promote easier and more economical access to youth ice hockey. Watch the websites for more info!
